Troubleshooting Safari 1.0: Caching issues

CNET staff

Safari 1.0 exhibits a strange caching problem that causes cached pages from a few days to be displayed in place of the current version.

One MacFixIt reader describes the problem "When I use the back page function in Safari is does not go back to the previous page, but goes back to the previous page from about 2 days ago. This becomes an issue when I read a forum and then go back and all the new posts are gone."

An effective - but obviously undesirable if you would like to retain caching functionality - workaround is to use a third-party utility like Safari Enhancer to disabling all of Safari's caching mechanisms.

On a related note, we are experiencing problems in-house with Safari's URL caching function. Certain caps sensitive URLs will constantly change to the wrong capitalization if you typed it wrong the first time. For instance, the URL: http://www.macfixit.com/SomeTitle (assuming this non-existent directory is caps sensitive) will continually revert to: http://www.macfixit.com/sometitle if that is the way it was first entered. This frustrating bug forces you to either clear the auto-completion cache, or temporarily use a different browser.

See our special report, Troubleshooting Safari 1.0, for more information on Apple's browser.
