Troubleshooting Mac OS X 10.3.x: FileVault and iTunes; Journaling and OS 9

FileVault and iTunes We've previously reported on a number of issues with Panther's FileVault option. Reader Michael Block reports another problem relating to burning CDs in iTunes:

"I suddenly began getting 80% buffer underrun errors burning CDs on my Que Firewire CD burner [a supported drive -Ed.], Prior to 10.3 I had never had one error. After disabling the FileVault menace this problem disappeared. Re-enabling FileVault and the problem recurred."

Journaling and OS 9 By default, any drive you format under Panther will have journaling enabled. In addition, any drives connected to your Mac when Panther is installed will be journaled. If you later connect one of these drives to a Mac running OS 9, the journal is supposed to be ignored. In other words, there shouldn't be any issues with backwards compatibility. At least that's the way it's supposed to work. As reader Ruud Altenberg reports:

"At work I'm using a G4 which runs Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS X 10.3.1. I occasionally have to boot to OS 9 as we have certain projects done in SuperCard 3.6 which cannot be updated to SuperCard 4.1 yet. After updating to Panther, I started experiencing problems with these SuperCard projects under OS 9: there would be unexpected delays in opening "modules" and every now and then the Mac would freeze completely. Some projects reported "The disc may be damaged" errors and were irretrievably damaged. As these problems occurred only after I had updated to 10.3, I tried to figure out the difference between my 10.2 and 10.3 setup. This appeared to be the disk journaling introduced in 10.3. I disabled journaling on the hard disk containing the SuperCard files, retrieved projects from backup and everything was back to normal for these projects."

More information about journaling can be found an an Apple Knowledge Base article and in a good article on AFP548.com.
