Troubleshooting Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) #6: Wake-from-sleep issues; QuarkXpress 6.0 follow-up; Quicken; more

Wake-from-sleep issues While there have been a number of reported problems with waking from sleep after updating to Mac OS X 10.3, the general consensus has focused on one specific scenario:

Sometimes when sleep is activated, the hard drive will appear to spin down and the monitor will go dim, but the fans will stay on, indicating that the processor(s) is still functioning. When the user attempts to re-awaken his or her system, the monitor will remain dim.

This problem is not consistent, and is not repeatable every time by most users experiencing it.

One potential clue is that some users experiencing this problem have been able to successfully put their system to sleep and awaken it after a restart or a cold start, but only if they haven't performed any tasks yet. This indicates that some process (possibly a graphics card initialization?) could trigger the problem.

George Lacy's loss of video with a GeForce card lends credence to this theory:

"After installing Panther (not a clean install) I lost video on my GeForce4 MX 440 AGP card. The computer started up fine until time for the finder to come up and then the screen goes black and presumably the computer freezes. I was able to get video initially but the screen redraw was terrible. When I tried to change the resolution the monitor went black and the computer seemed to freeze - although I have mouse movement."

QuarkXpress 6.0 follow-up For the past few days we've been covering a problem with "corrupt" QuarkXpress 6 Activation files that can occur after doing a new or Archive install of Panther. We reported a workaround that involved re-installing QuarkXpress, and another that involved moving frameworks from one folder to another. MacFixIt reader Bryan Schappel offers another workaround:

"I've read many reports of users complaining about Quark 6 not working after upgrading to Panther. For those that do not want to manually move frameworks around there is a very elegant solution. Inside the Quark 6 application folder there is a folder named 'For System.' The application in this folder, named 'QuarkXpress Components' is the installer for the needed frameworks. Simply run this installer and all is well."

Multiple server names Nick McNeill reports an unconfirmed problem with multiple server shares and the Panther 10-28--03 security update:

"After the Panther 10-28-03 security updated, I noticed that when you have multiple servers connected and you have mounted volumes that have duplicate names (ie server1/main and server2/main), the finder sidebar now only shows one of the same-name mounted volumes. This was never a problem before the security update and when connected servers are shown on the desktop they are fine."

Outlook Express If you are experiencing problems Outlook Express after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.3, you may want to try doing an erase and install of Panther, rather than an Archive and Install. Several readers who have started with a fresh disk are having no trouble.

Using synchronization with Microsoft Exchange Several readers have have had trouble performing synchronization with Microsoft Exchange address book via the Address Book application's preferences. The Exchange address book icon does not appear in the iSync devices window.

Peter MacLaren writes "It is noteworthy that the Panther package includes iSync 1.2, which is not installed if you already have iSync 1.3 installed."

Quicken 2004 Several readers have reported problems, confirmed by Intuit technical support, with Quicken 2004 after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.3. Some users have Quicken 2004 successfully launch just twice, then never again. For some it fails immediately. The Crash Report consistently shows a KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE with some Macs displaying this problem.

Intuit Technical Support indicates that they are receiving reports of this, and the company's team is currently testing Panther compatibility.

This problem is not universal, but readers who are experiencing the problem report that using the Finder's search command to delete all files related to the string "Quicken," then re-installing the software can result in proper operation.

Another workaround working for some readers involves deleting the 3 files "com.intuit.quicken.plist", "Quicken 2004 Preferences", and "Quicken" (which is a folder) from your ~/Library/Preferences folder. In this case, re-launching the application after deleting the files is all that is required.

Epson Scanners and Image Capture Epson scanners are supported out of the box by Apple's Image Capture, but Walter Huber notes that this can be a problem if you are looking to use the normal standalone Epson software which gives you much more control over your Epson scanner than Image capture does.

"You will need to use the 'Activity Monitor' (Applications:Utilities:Activity Monitor) to look for the Epson scanner plugin in the running processes. Once that is done, double-click on the Epson Scanner plugin app listing in Activity Monitor to choose to 'quit' the scanner plugin and thus restoring the Epson stand-alone software."
