Troubleshooting Mac OS X 10.2.5: One reader's frustration

CNET staff

While we continue to grapple with a kernel panic epidemic for some users applying the Mac OS X 10.2.5 upgrade, we'd like to pass along one reader's note describing several unsuccessful attempts to apply the Mac OS X 10.2.5 updater on a Power Macintosh G4/400.

"After the first crash, I backed up my data onto a firewire Hard Drive and did the following:

"1) Reinstalled a clean 10.2 then did a 10.2 to 10.2.5 combo update 83 MB installer. This also failed with consistent 'White Reboot of Death' screen.

"2) Reinstalled a clean 10.2 then did a 10.2 to 10.2.4 combo update. This worked Fine. Left running overnight and it was still OK. I then did a 10.2 to 10.2.5 combo update using an 83 MB installer. Again This also failed with consistent 'White Reboot of Death' screen.

"3) Reinstalled a clean 10.2 then did a 10.2 to 10.2.5 combo update 83meg installer. Again This also failed with consistent 'White Reboot of Death' screen.

"4) Reinstalled a clean 10.2 then did a 10.2 to 10.2.4 combo update. This worked Fine. I then did a 10.2.4 to 10.2.5 combo update 34 MB installer. Again This also failed with consistent 'White Reboot of Death' screen."

Exhausting all other options, simply remaining at Mac OS X 10.2.4 until a viable solution to the widely reported complete system failures arises. More updates on the way...
