Troubleshooting Mac OS X 10.2.3: Virtual PC 6 and Add-Ons

CNET staff

Virtual PC 6 and Add-Ons Readers continue to report extreme difficulty using Connectix's Virtual PC 6 release with Mac OS X 10.2.3. Michael Meyer offers a particularly distressing case - indicating that users should be wary of installing the Virtual PC Additions package.

"All went well, seemingly, with a noticeable speed improvement until I attempted to install the Virtual PC Additions. The installation dialog box quit in the middle until a message box announced that the computer to be restarted. During the restart the computer froze - somewhat like the occasional freezes on shutting down Virtual PC 5.04.

"Upon restart, Virtual PC crashed repeatedly immediately after invoking it. After a cold reboot and running fsck -y and repairing permissions, my Windows 2000 volume and other contents of my previous Virtual PC 5 folder except for Virtual PC 5 itself had disappeared from my computer. I removed all files I could find associated with Virtual PC 6, then reinstalled Windows 2000 without the additions and it ran as usual under Virtual PC 5.04 except for additions-dependent functionality. I again repaired permissions (several items required repair). Next I reinstalled Virtual PC 6. This time it crashed immediately every time I tried to run it."
