Troubleshooting Mac OS X 10.2.2: Kernel panics after Norton update; HP AppleScript

Kernel panics after Norton update Yesterday we noted the release of Norton Utilities 7.0.3, which can now see volumes for verification and repair under Mac OS X 10.2.2. Previous releases could not recognize any mounted disks under 10.2.2.

We continue to receive reports of kernel panics after applying the update, usually occuring directly after reboot, or when users attempt to repair a volume.

The cause is in some, but not all of these cases is having journaling turned on. Symantec told MacFixIt:

"Apple does not support Journaling on the consumer version of Mac OS X. Symantec's products are not tested to be compatible with Mac OS X Server where Journaling is meant to be used."

We are still attempting to isolate the other causes of kernel panic after applying the Norton Utilities 7.0.3.

Another HP AppleScript Workaround MacFixIt reader Adam Christianson has developed another AppleScript workaround for the well documented HP imaging device processor drain issue we first reported last month.

The small script, called DealWithHP, starts and stops the "HP Communications" process, and can be easily added to the dock for quick access. Chistianson has made the script available as "donation ware."

When using the driver for a number of HP imaging devices under Mac OS X 10.2.2, overall system performance will continually degrade over time. Under certain conditions, a "kernel panic" may result, forcing a restart. Apple and HP claim to have identified the causes of the incompatibility and are "working closely together on a solution at this time."

Other workarounds for the issue include reverting to Mac OS X 10.2.1, for which we have posted a quick guide.

iSync 1.0 beta unexpectedly quits when adding a phone Apple Knowledge Base article #75452 documents a problem where under Mac OS X 10.2.2, adding a phone to the iSync device list may cause the application to unexpectedly quit or stop responding.

Apple says it is "investigating this issue. This document will be updated when more information becomes available."
