Slide Show Screen Saver glitch explained Regarding yesterday's report that the Slide Show Screen Saver fade transitions etc. are gone for some users of OS X 10.1, here is the explanation: It's a feature, not a bug. Apparently, with slower Macs, these transitions did not work smoothly in previous OS X versions. Thus, it is now disabled on "slower" Macs, including most notebooks. You will still see the effect on Power Mac G4s and some other desktops. (Thanks, Tim Leed, Peter Hillman and Jim Grisham.)

SoftRAID for OS X coming David Paul received the following response from SoftRAID regarding SoftRAID and OS X 10.1: "January is our time schedule for an OS X version. Apple is only now releasing the developer tools and code needed to do low level SCSI work so we can work on SoftRAID."

MyTV support coming Hauppauge Tech Support confirmed to Tim Haigh that they have OS X drivers for planned for their USB TV devices (e.g., MyTV) due to released in November.

Realtek upgrade works James Ehrler writes: "My Kingston 120TX NIC 10/100 PCI Ethernet card was working great with Realtek's 8139 Beta driver in OSX 10.0.4. But, after upgrading to 10.1 it no longer appeared as an option in the Network Panel. Realtek has now uploaded a new 10.1 beta driver. Look in the EXE folder for the TAR file which, when expanded, has the Installation Package."

Dual monitor and DVD work-around David McCuskey was able to get DVD movies to play on his Viewsonic VG175 LCD attached to his PowerBook. He had the problem described in KB article 60895 but worked around it by changing the main display to 640x480 with 256 colors and restarting the DVD Player.

CD drive prevents Classic launch Bob Eller could not startup Classic in OS X 10.1 until he unplugged his QPS Que! USB drive.

AppleWorks problem and fix David Blangstrup found that, after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.1 and AppleWorks 6.2.1, he still got unexpected quits. Deleting AppleWorks preferences in the Library folder of the Home directory appeared to work at first but was not a permanent solution. The problem appeared to be that AppleWorks had been installed in the Applications folder, which requires admin access to make changes. David believes: "The AppleWorks 6.2.1 updater simply doesn't update AW 6.2 because it doesn't have sufficient privileges! But it doesn't say so - it says it's succeeded! The solution is to make a copy of AppleWorks in your Home directory and update that copy." It worked for David, although we do not yet have confirmations of this by others. [See also KB article on AppleWorks listed in the next item.]
