Continuing our previous coverage of Mac OS X 10.1.4:

Apple KB article Apple has released KB document 106859 titled "Mac OS X Update 10.1.4: Enhancements and "Before You Install" Information."

Installing 10.1.4 without prior Security Update Brian Romanchuk was able to install OS X 10.1.4 over a 10.1.3 system that had not been updated with the 10.1.3 April Security Update. He later tried to install the Security Update but was prohibited because he no longer was running 10.1.3. Thus, it appears (unless we are missing something here) that Brian does not have the Security Update and has no way to get it installed, short of erasing his drive (if you follow Apple's advice on this matter) and starting over. Perhaps Apple will release a Combined Updater that addresses this?

Update: Steve Maser was able to do the updates in the reverse order via the stand-alone Installers, but not via Software Update. Brian was also using stand-alone installers but was unsuccessful. We continue to investigate.

Default browser reverting to Explorer? Regarding yesterday's discussion of updates (including 10.1.4) that may reset OS X's default browser, Jonathan Simon notes that, in his case, the default browser as listed in Internet System Preferences remained as OmniWeb after updating to Explorer 5.1.4. However, Explorer's Protocol Helpers preferences for http and https were changed from OmniWeb back to Explorer. This caused Mac OS X Mail to open Explorer when a URL with either of those protocols was clicked.

Sound missing: a fix? Regarding yesterday's report that sounds in Project Builder no longer worked after updating to 10.1.4, Chuck Douglas got back to us with an unexpected solution: Remove the permanent icon in the Dock for Project Builder (he had created one); then install a new one, if desired. After Chuck did this, sound in Project Builder was restored.

Update: This did not work for our GoLive sound problem.

Keyspan driver and kernel panic Raymond Cranfill reports getting a kernel panic at startup after updating to OS X 10.1.4. He determined that the keyspan.kext extension (for the USB to Serial adapter; located in the System>Library>Extensions folder) was the culprit. Perhaps the new version, released yesterday, fixes this?

Update: Another reader reports no problem here. It may be that Raymond was using an older (pre-1.0.4) version of the driver.

CD burning fix Wade Zimmerman could not burn CDs to his LaCie burner after updating to 10.1.4. The solution was simply to disconnect the drive from the power source and the Mac. When he reconnected both, the drive was working again.

CD burning problem: half-solved After installing OS X 10.1.4, Ronald Postman could burn CDs from the Finder to his Matshita UJDA710 combo drive. He could not do this in 10.1.3. However, burning still does not work in iTunes.

Floppy drive support Paul Fox writes: The update finally allows me to use my VST USB floppy drive."

Printing fixed Jason Diefenbacher reports that 10.1.4 eliminated the problems he was having printing to a LaserWriter Pro 600 over AppleTalk.

Network fixes Several readers confirm improved network performance in OS X 10.1.4. Adam Knight confirms that the "PPP hang" bug has been fixed.

Yesterday's items updated Finally, several of the items posted yesterday were updated late in the day. Check it out.
