Mathematica; Eudora; Epson Continuing our coverage of Mac OS X 10.1.4 (see previous items one and two):

OS X 10.1.4 confuses Mathematica Bill Tozier found that, after updating to Mac OS X 10.1.4, Mathematica's license checker apparently believed I had moved Mathematica to a new machine, and refused to start up without a new password. Luckily, temporary passwords can be downloaded online for registered products."

Update: Gareth Russell replies: "I didn't have a problem with the 10.1.4 update. But, there are different license types, some more stringent than others. When I was running the OS 9 version, this problem occurred after almost any kind of system update."

Eudora problem? Perry Clark writes: "After updating to Eudora 5.1.1b23 and Mac OS X 10.1.4, Eudora will no longer get mail for my dominant personality. It says simply, 'You Have No New Mail.' I know I have lots of mail as I have checked with my ISP. I also am able to get the mail using Apple's Mail program. A check of the comp.mail.eudora.mac indicates others also have this problem."

Update: We have received several replies on this:

Brad Spachman wrote: "I believe this is a change in the Eudora beta. The read me states 'Made read/write system internet preferences the default.' This has ended up causing problems for people who don't have their dominant personality information in their Internet PrefPane settings. Entering that information cured the problem for me. It might also be cured if the reading/writing from internet preferences is turned off in their settings."

Kee Hinckley similarly replies: "Go into the settings and go to Miscellaneous and uncheck 'Read From System Internet Preferences.' I believe the latest Eudora beta changed this to default to on, but it has a very unpleasant side effect that's clearly a bug. It treats your mail.com address as the primary address, and although the status window says that it's contacting your primary account, if you check the logs you'll see it's actually contacting mail.com instead."

However, David Spatz found: "I too had the same problem until I realized that my full mail address had not been transferred during the update; the @--- was missing. I corrected this and Eudora worked perfectly."

Epson and 10.1.4 We have received numerous reports of various Epson printers and scanners no longer working after updating to Mac OS X 10.1.4. Deleting and reinstalling the printer in Print Center would be the first thing to try as a fix. Reinstalling the Epson software would be next. In any case, our Epson 900N still works.

Update: Steve Hunt adds: "I have an Epson Stylus C80 and have found that printing from OS X 10.1.4 is impossible when Classic is running (Print Center reports a communications error). Switching off all of the Epson driver software in the Classic Extension Manager doesn't seem to make any difference." Philip Gomez confirms. This problem existed in 10.1.3 as well.

Update: Stan Friedman also adds: "Epson tech support confirmed to me that their printer driver (at least for the C80) will not allow the printer to print from OS X while Classic is active. The workaround is as follows: after the communications error is reported, show the print queue, highlight the current print job and press Retry. Then restart the queue."

Other readers report that this technique works with other Epson printers, and some note that just hitting the Retry button occasionally works. This is evidently a longstanding problem.

Another reader suggested trying Apple's previous recommendation to delete any Canon drivers.
