Troubleshooting .Mac Backup 2.0 Beta: Username/password problem, solution

The beta 2.0 release of .Mac's Backup component has been consistently displaying a problem where the username and password are rejected when attempting to perform a backup.

One solution has emerged:
  • Clear the account information from the .Mac tab of the Internet Preferences pane,
  • Switch to the iDisk tab
  • Wait for the system to present an error because no .Mac info is present
  • Switch back to the .Mac tab and re-enter your account information

Now MacFixIt reader Jason Kacmarski offers an explanation for why this solution works:

"Those who are receiving this error probably have their keychain set to ask for confirmation before allowing the 'iTools' info. to be released to an app. Many people may not know this as they simply click the 'Always Allow' button the first time an app asks to access this password. To confirm this, open Keychain Access, select your iTools password, and click on the 'Access Control' tab. If the radio button for 'Confirm before allowing access' is selected, then this probably explains your problem. Clicking on the 'Always allow access to this item' radio button should solve your problem."

"If you look closely at this dialog box, you will see that the app requesting the info is listed as unknown (also see the info accessed when you click the 'disclosure triangle button (?)' which also lists unknown. As far as I know your info is actually being requested by a little app called 'BackupHelper,' but this is getting lost somewhere. For this reason, it appears that your keychain info doesn't know where to go so Backup never gets it. Having your keychain always allow access to this info seems to circumvent the problem. [...] By deleting the info in the .Mac tab and then switching tabs, you're effectively deleting your iTools entry in your keychain. Re-entering the info recreates this entry and defaults to the Access Control setting of 'always allow access to this item.'"
