Continuing our coverage of problems and solutions with IomegaWare 1.1.3 (see most recent item posted last time): Our source at Iomega claims that while they are unaware of any Mac OS 8.6-specific issues with the latest Iomega software, there may be problems due to an unusual source of a driver conflict. In particular: "It appears that the Mac OS sometimes unexpectedly foregoes the Iomega Driver in the Extensions folder of the startup drive and uses whatever is on the Iomega Jaz/Zip cartridge/disk instead. If the disk has an older version of the driver, "bugs" fixed in 6.0.4 driver will come back. For example, 6.0.4 fixed a bug with Jaz disks not ejecting on some drives due to a bug in 6.0.1, 6.0.2, and 6.0.3 (you won't find 6.0.3 much, it was mostly internal use only). We fixed this in 6.0.4." [Note: If you start with a Jaz/Zip disk inserted at startup, the driver on the disk will be used in preference to the driver in your normal startup drive (even if the Jaz/Zip disk is not being used as a startup disk). This is intentional behavior of the Iomega software. However, if the driver on the disk has not been updated, problems may once again result.]

The overall recommendation: Install the latest version of the Iomega software on your startup drive and then make sure that the option to "update the driver only when it is older" is selected from Iomega Drive Options' Advanced Options menu command. To be extra safe, also delete Iomega Drive Preferences before doing any of this.

Using Iomega Guest On a different note, Stephen Wentworth could not get Iomega's "Guest" application to work with a USB Zip disk. Iomega Tech Support told him that Iomega Guest does not work with the USB drive.
