Troubleshooting iDVD 2: PreferencePane "changes"; Buffer underrun error

iDVD 2 "changes" Preference panes Two readers (Roland Scarpa and Charles Campbell) have reported the same symptom resulting from installing iDVD 2: At least some System Preference modules no longer open correctly, launching iDVD instead. For example, selecting Dock Preferences from the Dock Command in the Apple menu launches iDVD 2 rather than opening the System Preferences module. The problem appears due to the fact that the PreferencePane files in /System/Library/PreferencePanes are listed as "iDVD Projects" (as indicated in the Show Info window) rather than as "Mac OS X Preference Panes."

Although we do not have iDVD and so cannot confirm this solution for sure, we believe the following should work:

  1. Select "Open with Application" from the Show Info window of a prefPane file.
  2. Access the popup menu in the icon and select Other.
  3. Locate and select System Preferences (it should be in the Applications folder) by clicking the Add button.
  4. You should get a dialog box that says "You don't have privileges to change the application for this document only. Do you want to change all similar documents to open with the application 'System Preferences'?" Click to Continue.

System Preferences selections should now work correctly.

Update: We have several confirmations that this does work. However, one reader added: "The files are still listed as iDVD projects."

iDVD 2 buffer underrun error James Richter reports that there are numerous postings on Apple's Discussion Boards describing problems burning DVDs with iDVD 2.0. Typically, the symptom is that a message that says "illegal request - buffer underrun error" appears when burning is attempted. This did not occur in iDVD 1.x.
