Troubleshooting HP Deskjet Driver 2.2.1: Steps for installing properly; Quality setting reset, workaround

Steps for installing properly Joachim Schaller offers a step-by-step installation process to get the new HP Deskjet Driver 2.2.1 working properly. Several readers have reported system hangs during boot, an inability to use double-side printing, and other issues when not using this method:

  1. Start Print Center and delete the listed Inkjet printer(s)
  2. Get the installer of the version you have currently running on your computer and uninstall it
  3. log out
  4. log in
  5. start the installer of the new version 2.2.1
  6. repair permissions using Disk Utility
  7. do a search for "com.apple.print" and delete the files (can all be found in ~/Library/Preferences) - note that you will lose your current printer settings

Quality setting reset, workaround Anthony Kassir notes that if you create a user-defined preset with saved quality settings Draft and Grayscale, the quality settings revert to Normal and ColorSmart III if the saved preset is already selected after acquiring print dialog box. The workaround is to select any other preset, then re-select the user-defined preset.

This MacFixIt forum thread includes more details about the problem, including steps to reproduce.
