Troubleshooting Eudora 5.1: Paid mode; Signature file bug

Paid mode confusion Regarding the just released Eudora 5.1, several readers noted that the Installer only works Paid versions of Eudora. Actually, it's a bit more complicated. The Read Me states: "Paid copies of Eudora have an 'r' in the version when you get info on the Eudora application. Copies of Eudora that have been put in paid mode by entering a reg code will NOT be updated by this installer."

Update: On the other hand, Richard Chang replies: "I was using Eudora 4.3.2. I downloaded 5.1fc1, paid Qualcomm directly for it online. Then I updated to 5.1fc2 and 5.1 without any problems." Digby James similarly asserts: "I installed over my beta of Eudora 5 and had no problems at all. The About Eudora box says that it is registered to me, followed by the serial number and '(Paid).' It declares the version number to be just 5.1."

Update: David Negvesky replies: "When I got the same message about the Eudora 5.1 updater only updating 5.0r, I called Eudora's sales line. The helpful response was to surf to www.eudora.com and select the 'Download Now FREE' button with the white arrow on red background. The next page is entitled "Download Eudora 5.1 Email". Ignore the link at the top that reads 'Already using Eudora 5.0R, 5.0.1R or 5.0.2R (Paid mode)? Please click here.' Select instead the 'Eudora 5.1' link under the 'Eudora for Macintosh' banner (lower right). Using this updater, my update (paid mode) went without a hitch."

Howard Modell writes: "I got swept up by the confusion on this, too. However, to my relief, I discovered that the 5.1 Installer (not the updater) will also act as an updater. It happily and without problems updated my paid-mode 5.0.1 to 5.1, and as near as I can tell, preserved the 'paid-mode'-ness."

Jeff Hansen adds: "The R in the version actually number means you installed Eudora from a CD/boxed copy. Without the R means you installed it from a downloaded copy. You need to download the appropriate updater for the version you have." Tony Aguila concurs: "You need to download the 'sponsored' updater which will honor your serial number and keep your copy in paid mode."

This link should work for the non-R Paid version, according to Rob Sirota.

Hopefully, from all this advice, you will find at least one suggestion that works for you.

Signature file bug Steve Maser reports a bug in Eudora 5.1: If you have background threading turned off, your signature file will not be delivered along with your message. Qualcomm told him they were aware of the problem and would fix it in a "later version."
