Troubleshooting Backup 1.2.2: Third-party drives no longer supported?

CNET staff

Several readers are complaining that Backup 1.2.2 breaks functionality with a number of external FireWire and USB optical and solid-state drives. One reader writes:

"I've been using this happily for months, but this update has removed the ability to use third party CD Writers. I'm not pleased and will be submitting a complaint to Apple. The main reasons I took out .Mac membership were to get the Backup software and the Mac to Mac sync features."

Reverting back to version 1.2.1, not accessible through Apple's current Backup download form, will restore access to these drives.

UPDATE: If you are a .Mac member, you can access Backup 1.2.1 from the iDisk.
