Watch this: Use the HTC One M8 as a fitness tracker

Along with a bigger screen, faster processor, and improved camera, the HTC One M8 is also equipped with new sensors that bring a variety of unique features to the device. Gestures can be performed to turn the display on and a depth-of-field sensor allows photos to be refocused after they have been captured. Thanks to a low-power motion sensor, the device can also be used to track your steps, distance traveled, and calories burned. Here's how you can use the HTC One M8 as a fitness tracker:

Step 1. Download the free Fitbit app from the Google Play store.

Step 2. Open the app and join Fitbit if you don't already have an account, or sign into an existing one.

Step 3. When asked which tracker you would like to set up, select "No tracker yet," followed by the "Set up your phone" option. On the next screen you will be asked to enter an email address and password to create an account. Existing Fitbit users can access the device menu by clicking on the three-vertical-dots icon in the top-right corner of the app, selecting Devices, and choosing the "Set up a new device" option.

Step 4. Enter your name, birthday, height, weight, and gender. This information is used to calculate your base metabolic rate, which is used to determine your calorie count. Once the information has been saved you can begin using your HTC One M8 and Fitbit app to track your steps taken, distance traveled, and calories burned.

Tips

When you reach certain milestones, such as gaining 15,000 steps in a day, Fitbit awards you with badges. These badges can then be viewed on the company's Web site and shared with others. On the HTC One M8, however, these badges are also displayed on your BlinkFeed home screen. To view your badges, swipe to the far left home screen to access Blink feed, click on the menu at the top left-hand corner of the screen, and select Fitbit.

If you are experiencing battery drain due to the Fitbit app, simply log out of it to disable tracking. To do this, open the app, click the three-vertical-dots icon, and select the "Log out" option.
