TomTom makes good on its pledge to offer lifetime map and traffic updates on select models with its announcement today that the services are now available in North America. More specifically, TomTom has announced the availability of new versions of models in its XL and XXL series that will come bundled with the Lifetime Traffic service, Lifetime Map Update service, or both.
Units with the Maps service will be eligible to download quarterly updates to their TeleAtlas map data and POI databases at no additional cost, ensuring that users have the most accurate info about where they're going and how to get there. Like nearly all TomTom devices, these units will also feature the manufacturer's Map Share service, which supplies free user-generated map revisions--for minor issues such as street names, turning restrictions, etc.--between major updates.
Meanwhile, TomTom's Lifetime Traffic equipped devices will receive the latest traffic information every three minutes (presumable over am FM-TMC band), allowing them to recalculate total drive time and suggest more efficient alternate routes if they are available.
The new XL and XXL devices will be classified as "Lifetime Traffic Edition", "Lifetime Maps Edition", or "Lifetime Traffic and Maps Edition" to differentiate them from devices that do not include the new services. According to the Amazon pre-order information, these new devices (and the TomTom services) will be available on April 26.
