The following letter from Mitch Mandich (Apple Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales) and Philip Schiller (Vice President, Worldwide Product Marketing of Apple) was recently posted to< various mailing lists: We have recently begun to evolve Macintosh network management to bring improved network security, simplified network management, and more advanced student access to the millions of Macs used in education. This evolution will take us from the past with Mac OS 8 and At Ease, through the present with Mac OS 9 and Macintosh Manager, and into the future with Mac OS X. We are working very hard to ensure that these transitions are as smooth as possible for our education customers. In fact, many customers already have successfully moved their network infrastructure to Mac OS 9 and Macintosh Manager. However, some customers have encountered problems in doing so and have asked us for help. We have been working hard to respond as quickly as we can to these requests with updated releases of our software. In December we delivered version 1.2 of Macintosh Manager which answered many requests to allow the Macintosh Manager client software to run on older systems (all the way back to 68030-based systems running Mac OS 7.6.1) and the Macintosh Manager server software to run on a wider< variety of Apple Server products (versions of AppleShare IP Servers running on Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9 in addition to the latest Mac OS X Servers). Since then we have been hard at work on the next release of Macintosh Manager (version 1.3). This release will improve compatibility with older software applications, as well as further simplify the transition from the security model customers were used to with At Ease. We plan to release Macintosh Manager version 1.3 in April. It will be freely available to all our education customers.
