Tip: Solving "open with" problems after Archive and Install

CNET staff

After performing an Archive and Install process - which moves existing system files to a folder named Previous System and then installs a new copy of Mac OS X 10.2 - users sometimes experience problems with files trying to open with defunct applications inside the old system folder.

The problem is particularly pronounced with disk images, which are often used to apply incremental Mac OS X updates after doing an Archive and Install. Disk images will attempt to be opened with the old system's Disk Copy application, resulting in failure to mount.

There are two options for working around this issue:

1. Delete the old, unused installation of Mac OS X (in the folder 'Previous System) after recovering any necessary files.

2. Use the "Open With" option, accessible via the Get Info command in the Finder's "File" menu to select the new, currently active System's version of Disk Copy.
