Tip of the day: Eject CD tray to insert bootable CD

CNET staff
Here's a tip we tripped over the other day that I don't think we've posted before:

If you hold down the Option key at startup (with NewWorld Macs, such as the iMac and newer models), you get the screen that allows you select the System Folder and partition that you wish to use as the startup system/partition. The tip is that, if you press down Command-period while this screen is visible, the internal CD tray ejects, allowing you to insert a (bootable) CD. If you then close the tray and click the Rescan icon, the CD will show up - so you can select it as the startup volume. Convenient for those times that you wish to startup from a CD after a system crash.

Also see this related item on getting the CD tray to eject via an Open Firmware command. And, of course, holding down the mouse button at startup will also typically eject the tray and allow you to insert a CD - if you work fast enough to do so before the hard drive startup kicks in.
