What government conspiracies will Agents Scully and Mulder uncover in the new "X-Files?" Fox

It's not one of Agent Mulder's conspiracy theories. Hit supernatural show "The X-Files" -- which aired on Fox from 1993 to 2002 -- could be returning to Fox with none other than original actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles.

Fox executives Dana Walden and Gary Newman revealed during the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour that they are in talks with "X-Files" creator Chris Carter about bringing back the show for a new generation of fans to debate and love.

"It's true that we've had some conversations on 'X-Files,'" Newman told Entertainment Weekly. "We're hopeful of being able to bring that back at some point."

"Gary and I both worked (at 20th Century Fox Television) through the entire run of 'The X-Files,'" Walden told EW.com. "It was a great experience. We've maintained good relationships with Chris, David and Gillian. We're very hopeful, but it's hard. The actors are very busy. They have a lot going on. Chris has a lot on his plate, so it's just trying to carve out the time."

While "The X-Files" just wouldn't be the same without its original lead characters Agent Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Agent Dana Scully (Anderson), both actors already have plenty of ongoing projects to juggle.

Duchovny will be on the NBC s drama "Aquarius" playing a homicide detective on the hunt for Charles Manson in the 1967. Anderson recently starred in the crime drama "The Fall" and has a recurring role on NBC's "Hannibal." She also stars in the upcoming BBC "War and Peace" TV mini-series.

Both actors are also budding novelists. Anderson writes the sci-fi book series " EarthEnd Saga" for Simon & Schuster's new imprint Simon451, while Duchovny just published his debut novel, "Holy Cow: A Modern-Day Dairy Tale," for Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Update, January 20: While series creator Carter and co-star Anderson have yet to comment on the possible return of the show, Duchovny told USA Today that he's "more than happy and excited to bring it back and do it again with Gillian (Anderson) and Chris (Carter)."

"I'm assuming that it will happen sooner rather than later now," Duchovny added. "We'll see what form, how many episodes. Certainly, I can't, nor would I be interested, in doing a full season. It will be in some kind of limited form. We're all old, we don't have the energy for a full season."

So our fingers are crossed that we'll see Mulder and Scully chasing after aliens again, with the ghosts of the Lone Gunmen in tow.
