The Mac OS 8.6 stall: two suggested "explanations"

CD/DVD Driver A reader claims that the cause of the Mac OS 8.6 stall on his Mac - "for those who experience it using PPP and not Ethernet/DHCP - is the Apple CD/DVD Driver extension. He writes: "If this extension is disabled, the 'stall' will go away." Another reader, Jeff Hanna, reported a similar finding. Although I still am a bit skeptical, several postings in the MacFixIt Forum thread on this subject confirmed that it worked. The reader states that Apple is aware of this and is working on a fix.

Asante and Ethernet Meanwhile, Will Cosgrove states that removing Apple's Ethernet driver extension eliminated stall problems with his Asante Ethernet card (see item from last time and previous Mac OS 8.6 item).
