The 404 634: Where Michael Showalter... (podcast)
On today's episode of The 404 Podcast, hosts Jeff Bakalar, Wilson G. Tang, and Justin Yu are proud to welcome comedian Michael Showalter into the studio. He chats about his new "Making of..." Web series and more.
We had a longer show title in mind when we asked Michael to help us think of ideas this morning, but who are we to argue with greatness? The comedian behind "The State," "Wet Hot American Summer," Stella, "The Baxter," and more joins us in the studio to chat about his new "Making of..." Web series on Babelgum. He also reveals news about the forthcoming musical based on "Wet Hot American Summer" and tells us about the next evolution of "The Michael Showalter Showalter." Strangely enough, we also manage to get him to sing a quick cover of "Little Drummer Boy" with Wilson G. Tang, aka the closet chorister.
Michael's latest project is a series of Web shorts on Babelgum that go behind the scenes of modern commercials to expose the absurdity of selling a product. The first video in the four-part series reveals the making of this Intel commercial that features a chorus of Intel employees singing the familiar chime at the end.
As usual, Michael casts recognizable faces like Zak Orth and Andrea Rosen to play a duo of frustrated directors who have to deal with a chorus that just can't get the melody right. Look forward to three more episodes of "Michael Showalter Presents...The Making of" posting soon, and don't forget to add Michael on Twitter for the latest news!
Speaking of Twitter, we have to ask about this tweet Michael posted about his encounter at Starbucks with director Steven Spielberg. Tune in for a hilarious story that somehow ropes in Jeff Goldblum, a whip, a coupon for a 67-cent coffee, and a saddled Velociraptor. Don't ask, just listen!
Finally, big thanks to everyone who e-mailed and tweeted us questions for Michael! We're able to shoot off a few before we go, and we're blown away by the news that a musical adaptation of the movie "Wet Hot American Summer" is currently in development! Michael tells us that it will include original songs by the cast from the cult-classic movie. We'll be sure to get him back in the studio once it kicks off!
