Testing your phone line for 56K capability

Bob Warner notes that "U.S. Robotics maintains a dial-up BBS that can diagnose a phone line at no charge. Dial 1-888-877-9248, and enter "Line Test" when it asks for your first name. The system will perform tests and determine whether the user's phone line can support 56-kilobit technology." I tried it (dialing up via the ClarisWorks communication module) and, at first, received a result code of 3, which meant that x2 was possible on my connection but that I would likely get a reduced rate due to line noise. On several subsequent tests, the news was worse: I received a result code of 2, which meant "x2 is not currently possible on this connection, or is likely to be highly impaired."
