Teen who allegedly took selfie with dead body is charged with murder

Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.

16-year-old Maxwell Marion Morton from Jeanette, Penn. has been charged with first-degree murder, homicide and firearms possession.

Police say that he shot his classmate Ryan Mangan in the face. Next, he allegedly took a selfie with the dead body and sent it to a friend via Snapchat.

Morton's friend allegedly took a screenshot of the image and saved it. Police said that it was the unnamed friend's mother who passed the image on to them.

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review reported that Morton is being charged as an adult. It quotes Westmoreland County District Attorney as saying of the selfie: "It was a key piece of evidence that led investigators to the defendant."

The Tribune Review reports that the affidavit says: "(Police) received a copy of the photo which depicted the victim sitting in the chair with a gunshot wound to the face. It also depicts a black male taking the 'selfie,' with his face facing the camera and the victim behind the actor. The photo had the name 'Maxwell' across the top."

Morton is also alleged to have sent incriminating text messages.

Various forms of technology and social media have been used by alleged lawbreakers to accidentally incriminate themselves, or even to taunt authorities. However, the circumstances surrounding this case seems especially disturbing. Police have thus far ascribed no motive to the shooting.
