TechTool Pro 2's "missing" Undelete feature; 2.0.4 and 2.0.5 updates coming soon

CNET staff
Alan Ackerman found that TechTool Pro 2 was unable to recover accidentally erased files, despite having a "File Recovery" option and despite having a Protection feature that can take inordinately long to run. When he asked MicroMat about this, they replied: "Currently, TechTool Pro 2 does not have an 'Undelete' feature. This feature will be implemented as a free update to the application in the near future."

I asked Jeff Baudin (of MicroMat) about this and he graciously supplied more details:

"Actually, it has an awkward and unacceptable one. Here's how it would be done: 1) User shuts down machine for night. Protection file updated; 2) Next day/session user accidentally trashes file; 3) User realizes mistake; 4) User goes to file recovery panel and can get file back.

However, if the user shuts down the machine prior to recovering the file (thus updating the protection file to the current state of the drive), the record for that file is lost.

We'll be releasing version 2.0.4 at the end of the month. This is the one with optimization. After that, we'll be working on a complete trash-management system that includes a really cool 'conventional' undelete feature. It will also have some neat options for the trash can (in a nutshell, we'll be overriding the Finder can with our own). This should be done in early September and will be called 2.0.5."
