Sympatico DSL service: problem registering for iTools: a follow-up

Yesterday, we reported on problems with registering for iTools via Sympatico DSL. A number of readers offered additional information and potential solutions:
Jerry Tompkins adds: "The likely problem your two DSL users were having with iTools is due to the fact that they have dynamic DSL. The problem won't happen with static DSL, which usually costs a little more. Dynamic DSL users frequently also have trouble with streaming QuickTime."

Andrew Macrae writes: "There is a simple fix for the problem noted, where the registration process stalls at the Accept stage. Recently Sympatico moved to a transparent proxy server, and users were advised to remove their proxy server settings. Unfortunately the proxy could be better described as 'translucent'; it doesn't work in all cases. Set manual proxy configuration in your browser's Preferences to "ch1smc.bellglobal.com", port 80. I was able to complete the iDisk setup once I did this. This also fixed SETI@home v1.06."

Another reader suggests: "The problem seems to be with Access Manager software Beta 1.09b1. I installed MacPoET and work fine." Marc Bisaillon concurs. [However, some users have not had success even with MacPoET.]

On a related note, Tony Emond writes: "Mac OS 9 is not supported by Bell Atlantic DSL. This means no iTools, unless you sign up for the service by some other connection. The reason for this is that BA has decided to use PPP over Ethernet instead of DHCP leasing as a connection protocol."
