Survey says: telco vs. handset

Thanks to our readers who generously gave their time to reply to our Handset vs. Telco survey. We wanted to know whether your choice of phone model is more important than your decision to stick with your current telco, with 60 per cent of CNET readers polled saying that they would choose the phone over a telco.
We got a respectable 670 responses to our survey, with 399 readers leaning towards phone choice, 24 per cent said they'd stick with their network, and coming in third was value for money plans. We also asked which phone our readers are currently using and which phone or operating system they would choose when they went shopping again.
Following the buying trends in the US, 35 per cent of respondents said they’d choose an Android phone as opposed to 30 per cent who would choose an iPhone. Nearly 6.5 per cent are interested in Microsoft’s new Windows Phone system, while just short of 5 per cent will choose Nokia and 3 per cent will shop for a BlackBerry.
We also had the opportunity to compare the results from the responses to the second and third questions where we asked: what phone do you own now and what phone will you buy next? Some of the interesting pull-outs were:
- 166 people told us they own an iPhone and a remarkable 111 (or 66.8 per cent) said they would buy an iPhone again.
- Only 33 people who currently own an iPhone would buy an Android next. Most future droiders currently own either an HTC, Samsung or Nokia handset.
- 88 per cent of people shopping for a Nokia say they already own one.
- Only one person who currently owns a Windows Mobile handset, said they planned on buying a new Windows Phone.
