Suitcase Desktop vs Network Editions: a clarification

Suitcase Desktop vs Network Editions: a clarification

CNET staff
Mike Sherwood (of Extensis) offers this clarification about differing versions of Suitcase Desktop and Network Editions:

The Suitcase product line has been divided into two products. The first is Desktop Edition 9.03. This is Suitcase without the connection to the Suitcase Server. This version is geared to the designer in a stand-alone situation who does not need to share fonts with coworkers or clients. The second is Network Edition 9.04, which is basically Suitcase 9.01. This version sports full connectivity to the Suitcase Server, which distributes fonts to Suitcase workstations connected to the server. One connection to the Suitcase Server is included with each copy of Suitcase Network Edition.

These are not update or upgrade products, but a separation of the Suitcase product line into two products targeted at two segments of the Suitcase customers.

Suitcase Desktop Edition began shipping in December 2000. This is not an update or upgrade, but a new product with a new serial number starting with YME. A Suitcase 9.01 serial number that starts with ZZE will not work with this product.

Suitcase Network Edition began shipping in February 2001. Suitcase 9.01 is the exact same product as Suitcase Network Edition 9.04 except that one connection to the Suitcase Server was added to the product instead of being sold separately. Serial numbers from 9.01 correspond with the Suitcase Network Edition 9.04 product.
