Sphero 2.0 -- the little robotic ball that can be controlled via a smartphone app -- is now available for Windows 8 and 8.1 , creator Orbotix has announced.

The ball is compatible with Windows Phone, tablets, laptops and desktops running the latest versions of the Windows OS, and is available now to download for free via the Microsoft and Windows Phone app stores. The ball itself will be available in Microsoft stores in the US, or can be purchased online.

To celebrate the launch of the new apps, Orbotix is running a competition offering Windows and Windows Phone users a chance to win a Sphero 2.0 (the website may not work properly in Chrome -- Firefox is a better bet).

The company has no plans to launch for Windows the full suite of apps available on Android and iOS, but will be porting the SPRK education apps to the Windows platform.
