Summer is here, whether your thermostat says it or not. So maybe it's time for a new iPod cover with the beach elements in mind.

Speck Products on Thursday launched its new Portfolio Skin, a rubberized wallet-style case that should help protect the iPod from sand, water and sun. It's made of a shock-absorbing silicone and only opens to the bottom port, headphone jack and hold switch.

The case comes in two different color combinations with four interchangeable straps "to suit your mood or match your attire," Speck says, and is designed to fit all 4G and Photo iPods. It's on sale now for $34.95 at Speck's Web site, but will soon be available on retail shelves worldwide, the company says.

Ipodlounge readers so far have mostly given the case the thumbs-down, criticizing its cost, bulk and enclosed design. But one reader agreed the Portfolio Skin would be "great for taking an iPod to the pool or beach - true all around protection."
