Some users have reported an issue in which the speakerphone function does not work under iPhone OS 2.2. A sampling of reports from this Apple Discussions thread:

  • "After updating to 2.2, when I press the Speaker button while making a call, the audio vanishes. Yes, I have turned the volume all the way up. I have rebooted the phone. I have plugged in earbuds and removed them. Everything works as expected except the speaker-phone function."
  • "I have the same problem. My speaker phone was fine, more than loud enough. Then, I installed 2.2 and now it is unusable. It is loud for 1 second when I turn it on, but then it gets so quiet that I have to hold it up to my ear to hear anything."

If you are experiencing a similar issue, try the following: unplug then re-plug headphones or any other compatible device into the iPhone's audio jack several times and make sure there is no debris in the audio port.

Failing this fix, try the following:

  • Reset your iPhone by holding down the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears;
  • Restore your iPhone: Click the Restore button under the Summary tab. Restoring the phone will erase contacts, calendars, photos and other data on the phone, but will restore automatically backed-up information including text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, etc.
