SpaceSaver 5.0 prevents saving of files in other applications: Aladdin replies

We have previously mentioned problems (especially an inability to Save files) that certain applications have if Aladdin's SpaceSaver 5.x is installed. Aladdin had confirmed this. Marvin Bensman had the same problem with Microsoft Word 5.1 and SpaceSaver. He contacted Aladdin Systems Technical Support, who replied with the following additional information:

We have become aware of an incompatibility between ~StuffIt SpaceSaver and some other programs including the one(s) you mention. We are currently investigating the problem and will report any workarounds or fixes on our web site. In the mean time, the only definitive solution is to disable ~StuffIt SpaceSaver when using these other programs.

In some of these programs you can experiment with saving a new copy of the modified file by choosing `Save As...' from the File menu. But of course that means you'll be saving multiple copies of the file.

A follow-up reply from Aladdin added still more specifics:

StuffIt SpaceSaver 5.0 is known to cause a conflict that prevents certain applications from saving files. The following applications may not be able to save changes to documents when SpaceSaver 5.0 is installed: Microsoft Word 5.1a, Outlook Express 4.5, Adobe PageMill 3.0, Claris Home Page 3.0, Eudora Pro 3.1.3, 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, URL Manager Pro 2.5, NisusWriter, Freehand 8.0, Illustrator 8.0, ClarisWorks 4.0 and 5.0, AppleWorks 5.0, Web Confidential 1.1, Finale 98.

A personal note: This is just one of several issues (also see more recent items in the Archives which cover other problems as well as 5.x updates) raised regarding StuffIt Deluxe 5.0. Given the importance of this product to the Mac market, I find it hard to understand why Aladdin did not get more of these issues resolved before apparently rushing this product's release.
