Sound Manager 3.6.3 is out; but only for some Macs; claims to "improve audio/video synchronization"

As posted late yesterday... Previous reports on MacFixIt and an Apple TIL article confirmed problems with the version of Sound Manager that shipped with QuickTime 4.1. In response, Apple has released Sound Manager 3.6.3. It is only available from the Mac OS 9 Software Update control panel.

But... Several readers report that the Software Update control panel did not list this update. Our initial guess was that these readers had disabled or removed the extension. In general, the control panel does not offer to update files that you do not have installed or enabled. However, we now have received word that the failure occurred even with the prior version of the Sound Manager enabled. John Morris found that success< varied across different Macs:

"I tried using Software Update to grab the new Sound Manager 3.6.3. My PowerBook G3 said that no updates were available, but my iMac DV grabbed it. Both systems are running Mac OS 9 with QuickTime 4.1."

Update: Apple TIL article #59014 explains the mystery: "This update to Sound Manager improves audio/video synchronization. It is only for certain Macintosh computers and will only appear in the Software Update control panel for those systems. It is only available via the Software Update feature of Mac OS 9 at this time." Hey! Perhaps this at last will fix the audio/video synch problem with DVD movies! (Thanks, Bryan Goldstein of The PowerBook Source.)
