Sony's 5-inch 'Yuga' smartphone could go HD

If the rumors are correct about a Sony Android smartphone, HTC won't be the only vendor with a 5-inch 1080p HD display and top-notch specs.

Sony is ready to compete on the 5-inch 1080p HD display front. AndroidSchweiz

A rumored Sony smartphone operating under the codename of "Yuga" could be the company's first handset to offer a 5-inch, 1080p display.

Details, images, and benchmarks posted by PocketDroid and a Swiss Android blog suggest that the device could give HTC and others a run for their money.

The hardware appears to match up fairly closely to the HTC J Butterfly . Also, after looking at a number of freshly unearthed photos of the Yuga, I see a unibody enclosure that likely means an internal battery.

While the Yuga maintains some of the design aesthetics of recent Xperia models, it's also unique in its own right. The alleged features include the aforementioned 5-inch, 1080p HD display, along with 2GB RAM, a 12-megapixel camera, and a 1.5GHz quad-core processor.

Assuming Sony is able to deliver this handset in a timely manner, it would be a perfect blend of high-end hardware and a very recent version of Android. Sure, it may not 4.2 Jelly Bean , but Sony's done much worse when it comes to pairing hardware and software.

Given the amount of already-known details, I suspect this is the sort of device Sony would like to bring to Las Vegas and CES in January. I've reached out to Sony and will report more when I hear back.
