Sony Xperia Arc S and others may get Jelly Bean after all
Sony says it's 'actively investigating' updates for all devices.
Sony has backtracked on recent claims that the Xperia Arc S and other Xperia phones would be denied an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
On its official blog, Sony claims that it is "actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices", going on to reassure, "in the meantime, our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia S and 2011 Xperia smartphones continues as planned."
A Sony spokesperson on a company Facebook page had said that last year's Xperia Arc S wouldn't be treated to a nibble of Android Jelly Bean, also mentioning that the Xperia Mini Pro would be getting left behind.
Sony now says that information was given out "in error", though whether the data itself was wrong or whether the Sony bod was simply not supposed to reveal it yet, is unclear.
The news gives owners of the Xperia Arc S and other recent Xperia phones hope that Sony isn't leaving its recent toys behind just yet. I wouldn't hold your breath though, as Sony and other Android manufacturers have proved notoriously slippery when it comes to updates, failing to give accurate time estimates and quietly leaving relatively new phones behind.
Last year's Xperia Play was dropped from the Ice Cream Sandwich roster, for example -- following Sony's promise to update all of its 2011 Xperia phones to Android 4.0.
Sony promises information on the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Xperia P and other 2012 Xperia smart phones "over the next couple of weeks".
