Sony working on VR headset for PS4

Sony is reportedly on track to reveal a PlayStation-based Oculus Rift competitor in 2014.

Sony could be taking the PS4 into the realms of virtual reality (VR), if recent reports are to be believed.

According to Eurogamer, Sony is developing a VR headset similar to the Oculus Rift to work with the PS4. The device has been reportedly demonstrated internally at Sony, using the racing title Driveclub to show how gamers could look around the inside of a car.

Sony was apparently set to reveal the device at Gamescom last month, but pulled the headset at the last moment. According to CVG, Sony is still undecided on whether the product should be marketed as an add-on for the console or as an integral part of the gaming experience.

The VR device may now be introduced at the Tokyo Game Show, which kicks off on 19 September, although other reports suggest that the company may wait until 2014.

Sony has produced two headsets before — the HMX-T1 and T2 — although both focused on immersive 3D, rather than full virtual-reality control. The HMZ-T3 was announced just recently.

While Oculus Rift has garnered a great deal of excitement and attention, the product is still in the development stage, and is not ready for a commercial release at this stage.
