Taiwanese news site DigiTimes has quoted sources at both the Foxconn and Pegatron manufacturing plants who said that Sony has internal plans for at least 16 million units of the PS4 to ship by the end of 2013.

The sources said that Sony has only just started requesting quotes on the requisite components, but that mass component shipments in August would allow the PS4 to be in shops by Christmas 2013.

It's certainly ambitious, given that Sony doesn't even appear to have the industrial design of the PS4 finalised, but companies such as Foxconn and Pegatron are more than used to a sharp turnaround when it comes to getting goods on shelves.
