Sony Mobile has today unveiled its latest flagship Android smartphone, the Xperia Z4. The announcement arrived with little fanfare on the company's Japanese website, outlining specs for the new flagship and slating it for a mid-year release in Japan.

As yet, the smartphone maker has not announced an international launch date.

Following on from last year's flagship Xperia Z3, the Z4 features a 5.2-inch, full-HD display and shaves off a few millimetres of thickness for a slim 6.9mm, 144-gram design. The face of the phone measures 146mm by 72mm, with a slim bezel around the 1,920x1,080-pixel screen.

Sony's Xperia range is known for both powerful cameras and water- and dust-resistant design, and Z4 looks to be no exception. Similar to its predecessor, the Z4 is equipped with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera and a 20.7-megapixel camera on the rear.

The new flagship also comes with an IP6X dustproof rating, and is certified IPX5 and IPX8, meaning it's not only splash-resistant but can survive being totally submerged in water for an indefinite amount of time. The announcement also boasts of a waterproof USB port, so there's no need for sealed caps this time around.

Underneath the aluminium and glass construction, the Z4 is packing a 2,930mAh battery, a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM and Android 5.0 Lollipop, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system. According to Sony, the Z4 will pack 32GB of onboard storage, but there's also an option to expand that with a microSD slot taking up to 128GB.

The Xperia Z4 will be available in white, black, copper and aqua green, but there's no word on price as yet.

A Sony Mobile representative said via email that, "Sony Mobile is considering the feasibility in other markets."
