Sony Spressa FireWire drive: updated version coming for iMacs and G4s

CNET staff
Regarding yesterday's report of problems with the FireWire Sony Spressa CD-RW drive, Jim Schroeder (of CharisMac Engineering, Inc.) offers this explanation:
The only known issue with the current Sony FireWire CD-RW drive is the fact that it won't work with G4s and iMac DVs because of a hardware related problem. The only model Mac that this drive is intended to work with is the Blue G3 (as it clearly states on the box). Newer model Macs were not available for testing when this drive went through the qualification process.

Sony tells us that users that have purchased this drive for use with other model Macs (iMac DVs and G4s) need to contact Sony regarding an upgrade path that can make the drive work with these newer Macs.

With that said, Sony has a new FireWire CD-RW drive in the works which is being tested as we speak.
