The issue only affects VaioFit multi-flip 11A Laptops with the model numbers SVF11N18CGP and SVF11N18CGS, released in February 2014. According to a recall notice on the ACCC recalls website, the lithium-ion battery in the affected model may overheat, which "poses a potential fire and burn hazard to consumers".

The product was sold between 1 March and 10 April 2014 on the brand's online store as well as Sony-branded retail outlets in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia.

According to a spokesperson for Sony, the issue is "limited to a small number of laptops across ANZ" and the brand has "contacted each affected customer to notify them of the situation and will replace or refund the affected personal computers at no charge".

Consumers are advised to stop using the product, unplug it from mains power and contact Sony on 1300 13 7669.

The recall comes after Sony announced it would be exiting the Vaio business globally as part of a restructure of the Japanese business.

Sony Australia has advised that it will continue its after-sales services for Vaio products (including in warranty and out of warranty services), and will continue to provide support and spare parts in accordance with Australian & New Zealand consumer laws and regulations.
