The Sony Ericsson Xperia family grew by two today with the introduction of the Xperia Ray and Xperia Active.

The two Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphones, which were announced at CommunicAsia 2011 in Singapore, are expected to ship in Q3 to select markets worldwide--specifics, such as pricing and U.S. availability, were not revealed at this time--and offer two different areas of focus.

If you couldn't tell by the name, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active is a handset aimed at those with an active lifestyle. It features a dust-proof and water-resistant design with a 3-inch, 320x480-pixel Reality Display that works even if there's water on the screen or if your fingers are wet. The phone can even monitor your heart rate and pulse, thanks to its built-in ANT+ wireless technology, and comes with other extras like preloaded sports apps and accessories, such as an arm case.

Other goodies include a 1GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera with HD video capture, Bluetooth, and GPS.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray is a little more high-end, with its sleek design and advanced camera. The smartphone boasts an aluminum chassis that measures just 9.4mm thick and comes in four different colors: black, gold, white, and pink. It also has a 3.3-inch, 854x480-pixel Reality Display with the Mobile Bravia Engine, which brings such advantages as noise reduction, sharpness, color management, and contrast enhancement.

The Xperia Ray also packs an 8.1-megapixel camera with a Sony Exmor R CMOS sensor and other advanced camera options like 16x digital zoom, aperture f/2.4, face detection/recognition, smile detection, and can capture 720p HD video.

The rest of the smartphone's feature set is pretty standard, with full wireless options (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, aGPS) and support for the North American 3G bands.

In addition to the Xperia Ray and Active, Sony Ericsson also introduced two new accessories: the LiveDock multimedia dock and the LiveSound headphones. Both are also expected to be available in Q3.
