Sony has taken a long run up and dive-bombed into the waterproof compact camera pool, earning stern rebukes from a pimply lifeguard and two ladies who were just enjoying the sunshine and didn't want to be splashed, thank you very much. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 is the company's first waterproof compact -- a slim 10-megapixel shooter that also laughs in the face of dust, cold temperatures and being dropped.

Waterproof down to 3m for up to 60 minutes, the 18mm thick TX5 should make a dinky snorkelling companion. Should you feel the need to get all Jacques Cousteau on us, 720p video and a 4x optical zoom will aid you in your aquatic endeavour. The 76mm (3-inch) touchscreen is usable underwater too.

Sony Cyber-shot TX5 back

Sony's SteadyShot tech and a new improved panorama feature are also included. The TX5 is available in black, green, pink, red and silver and will be on sale in March, with price to be announced. Check back soon for a full review.
