Solving importing problems in iMovie 5.0.2 (#4): Re-installing iMovie HD

CNET staff

We continue to cover issues with importing video from various devices (listed as supported) in iMovie 5.0.2.

Earlier this week we published a number of workarounds, including deletion of specific .plist files, a GarageBand-based fix, and importation directly into QuickTime.

Now MacFixIt reader Isako reports that re-installing iMovie HD may work to resolve the issue in some cases.

Isako writes:

"I have been using my Canon Optura Xi, and have been successfully importing movie files from the camcorder using iMovie (iLife 04) via the FW400 connection. [...] Upon installing iMovie HD, I could not get it to import using the same hardware setup. When I installed iLife '05, since iMovie and iMovie HD is different name, I had the old copy of the iMovie intact, thus was able to import the movie file using iMovie, and then using iMovie HD to edit and export to iDVD5. But even when iMovie would import, iMovie HD will not (with no change in hardware setup)

"[...] One thing that did seem to have done the trick is after uninstalling the iMovie and the.plists, reboot, then re-install iMovie HD. I was able to import 3 minutes worth of video doing this using iMovie HD. I have not yet attempted to import a whole 60 minute tape yet, so repeatability of this is unknown."
