Solving importing problems in iMovie 5.0.2 (#3)

Users continue to report issues with importing video from various allegedly supported devices in iMovie 5.0.2, corroborating previous coverage.

MacFixIt reader Steve Coates writes:

"I am having the same problem reported on your site with iMovie 5.0.2. It refuses to import from my video camera while it is converting from analogue. Had no problems with this setup and a previous version of iMovie, and I am mighty unhappy with it.

There are a number of potential workarounds:

Launch, then close GarageBand We previously reported on a situation where absent audio in a number of third-party applications was restored by simply running the application GarageBand.

It appears that in some cases, this odd workaround may also provide relief from this situation.

Delete iMovie .plist file Deleting the property list file:

  • com.apple.imovie.plist

located in ~/Library/Preferences can also work to resolve this issue..

Try importing directly to QuickTime, then switching back to iMovie Some users have reported that first importing video into QuickTime 7 Pro, then re-attempting the same procedure in iMovie 5.0.2 resolves the issue. Note that you must have iMovie 5.0.2 in Edit mode before attempting to import video in the QuickTime application, or you will receive an error message stating that two applications are attempting to use the same device.

Turn camera off then on You may also want to attempt the following process for importing video, if the above steps fail.

  • Quit iMovie if it is running
  • Turn your camera or other digital video device on
  • Connect the device to the Mac via its FireWire/USB cable
  • Launch iMovie, and again attempt importing
