Solution for problems installing Tenon Post.Office

Some readers have reported problems installing Tenon Intersystems' Post.Office, an e-mail server package.

One MacFixIt reader describes the problem:

"Running the installer package for this software did not finish [...] I noticed that PostOffice.app launched in the background (it opened its 'configuration window', but there were no contents in the window except an 'OK' button), at about 90 percent completion, and this is when the installer stopped.

"So I quit PostOffice.app and the installer finished itself. I restarted as instructed and then launched PostOffice.app to do the configuration, but it still had only a blank window with the 'OK' button.

We've now received a step-by-step workaround from a Tenon product representative:

"Bring up a terminal window (Finder/Applications/Utilities/terminal) and type in the following to open a new shell as 'root.'

  • sudo tcsh

"Then, please run the following to uninstall Post.Office, NOTE: This will remove any Post.Office data/mail/etc so if there is any data the customer wants to keep, please don't run this).

  • /usr/local/post.office/post.office shutdown
  • cd /usr/local
  • rm -fr post.office
  • cd /var/spool
  • rm -fr post.office
  • rm -fr mailbox
  • cd /Library
  • cd StartupItems
  • rm -fr PostOffice
  • cd ..
  • cd Receipts
  • rm -fr Post-Office.pkg
  • cd /etc
  • rm post.office.conf
  • exit

"Then, please make sure of the following. Type:

  • hostname

"into the terminal window. If the hostname isn't correct, please edit the file /etc/hostconfig and set the HOSTNAME to your host name. The line should read:

  • HOSTNAME=yourhostname

"Reboot. Re-run the install and pop the back window to the front to run the application."
