Software Update 1.2 is now available via use of prior versions of the Software Update control panel. or directly at Apple's Software Downloads site. It worked perfectly when we tried it. However, we already have a few reports of problems. "Not able to run" error Several users report getting a message that says "Software Update is not able to run" upon launch (the previous version obviously worked fine). Update: Michael Davis found that this message is due to having the Security Library extension disabled. We confirmed this by removing the extension. This extension may otherwise get disabled if one disables Keychain and/or Multiple Users support. Other problems? If you are having problems getting the updated control panel to work, increasing the memory allocation of the software may help. Tom Johnson notes that there are three separate programs, each with their own memory allocation, that you may need to adjust: (1) Software Update control panel (v. 1.2); (2) Software Update Engine (v. 1.2, in the Extensions folder); and (3) Installer Engine (v. 4.5.5, in System Folder/Application Support/Software Update). By the way, the Software Update folder in the Application Support folder appears to be a new arrival with this version. It also includes a new Apple Software Restore (v. 2.0.6) application. The remaining items included with this software suite are: Software Update Scheduler (v. 1.2, in the Extensions folder) and Updateable Items (v. 1.2, in the Preferences folder). Update: Probably due to problems on Apple's server end, the results of an Update Now request can< vary. For example, when we tried it this morning, we got a list of several files that it said we needed. We did not download any of them. When we ran Software Update again a few hours later, it now claimed that we did not need any new software at all.
