Software-based iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak claimed

Ben Wilson

We previously reported on the development of a jailbreak for iPhone software/firmware 1.1.3, demonstrated in a video, that requires hardware modification. Now Jonathan "NerveGas" Zdziarski, developer of a NES emulator for the iPhone and a co-implementer of previous jailbreak methods, has claimed the existence of a separate, software-based 1.1.3 jailbreak that takes "about a half hour for savvy users." Zdziarski and fellow developers are still withholding instructions for executing the jailbreak, but the image at left (from Zdziarski's site) allegedly depicts an iPhone jailbroken using the new method.

Jailbroken iPhones allow full read/write access to their filesystems, enabling (among other things) the installation of unofficial native applications.
