Snitch 2.6.4 problems; update coming

Two readers have reported the exact same symptom with Snitch 2.6.4: a Finder quit immediately after startup. Tom Kostes had it when running Mac OS 8.1 (and going back to an older version of Snitch fixed it). Jonathan Lundell had it running Mac OS 9.0. A conflict test with Conflict Catcher isolated Aladdin Compression 5.1.2 as the cause (it's part of DropStuff). Disabling the control panel eliminated the problem for Jonathan. [This seems a bit unlikely to us, as the control panel does not appear to be one that loads at startup; we are investigating this further.]

William Richards had the same symptom, running Mac OS 8. He adds: "If the Snitch control panel window is open and Snitch is turned on, the problem does not occur; but when the control panel window is closed, the problem does occur."

Update: Mitch Jones (author of Snitch) replies:

There is definitely a problem with Snitch on systems probably prior to 8.5 when clicking on things in the Finder. This comes from a change for Mac OS 9 that appeared to be safe for previous systems, but obviously wasn't. I've identified the problem and fixed it. I expect to release an updater for it hopefully this weekend.

As for an incompatibility with Aladdin Compression, that's unlikely. I say this because it's only an application (an application control panel to be precise)... [and we agree!]

Several other readers similarly concur that the problem is mainly or entirely with Snitch (although it does not seem to happen to all Snitch 2.6.4 users).
