Slow .Mac speeds in Europe: Bandwidth cap?

It looks like Apple is capping bandwidth for European .Mac transfers.

CNET staff

Dozens if not hundreds of users are reporting extremely slow transfer speeds to and from .Mac servers in Europe. This Apple Discussions thread harbors a number of the complaints.

In most cases, users report that when they connect to a .Mac Gallery they are unable to download content at speeds faster than 80 KB/sec, regardless of connection type, making the Gallery feature virtually unusable for both Images and Video. However, downloads or uploads to iDisks take place at normal speeds. This would seem to indicate some sort of cap on transfer speed for the former (.Mac galleries and hosted sites).

Some typical reports:

  • "I'm getting capped around 80 kb/sek. With Apple demo galleries and loading simultaneously two different clips I get around twice what I got with one. So definitely capped on Apples end. "
  • "I have just run Apple's recommended SpeedTest and got the following results: local test 3375kbps (I think this is 422kBytes/s); San Francisco test 2726 kbps (on the same basis 341kBytes/s); Download from Gallery 82kBytes/s:
  • "I have raised another complaint which simply asks why I get 80kBytes/s from Gallery and dotmac websites and 408kBytes/s from Apple Support. As you would expect I have not had a response. In actual fact I have not received the computer generated acknowledgement."
